The Symposia began in 2002 as an occasion to mark, by means of a cultural event based on the exchange of views of different experts in a specific research area, the anniversary of the foundation of the Scuola Normale Superiore, on the 18th October 1810.
It was decided to concentrate a series of events on a single day serving both as a commemoration of the Napoleonic origin of the Scuola Normale and as a moment of reflection and study. The two Faculties of Arts and Sciences alternate in organizing the Symposia.
The first year the Symposium “L'Autore Multiplo/Multiple Authorship” was dedicated to the controversial subject of multiple authors and the unity of a work of art, while in 2003 the Symposium called “The Flourishing of the Sciences in the 18th Century” offered a wide range of opportunities to investigate the golden century of modern science.
Celebrations for the inauguration of new structures or other donations to the school are often also carried out on the same day.
In the evening there is usually a concert of classical music which represents the beginning of the annual concert season organized by the Scuola Normale.
